Church of Panagia Odigitria

The church of Panagia Odigitria is located in Apolpena, 2 km south of the main town of Lefkada. It was built in the mid-15th century and it is one of the oldest Byzantine monuments of Lefkada. According to tradition, Eleni Palaiologina, the mother in law of Leonardo II Tocco, the last duke of Lefkada, lived here. The frescoes are of excellent quality and they date back to the mid-15th century. In the early 18th century the church was a dependency of the monastery of St. John the Theologian in Karya. Moreover, the church owned many acres of land until all property was expropriated in 1927.
